If you have your own take on fashion and sew your own clothes, chance is you’ve made a few fashion design sketches. If you want to do this in a fast and easy way, the Fashionary sketchbook might be something for you.

Fashion illustration

The Fashionary sketchbook is kind of like a Moleskine, accept it totally caters to fashion designers. The pages aren’t blanc but have a fashion template or croquis on them. This is a figure drawing that acts as a guide to sketch your design. If you aren’t that gifted in drawing, you’ll still be able to create a nice figure because you can trace it. This also allows you to work very fast. The template is printed very lightly and is almost invisible, so it doesn’t get in the way of your sketch once it’s finished.

The ins- and outs of the fashion industry

Besides the sketch pages the Fashionary also contains a few informative pages that are mostly useful to serious fashion designers, like: a list of textile and fashion fairs, a catwalk schedule and examples of presentation boards. But also info that can be nice for the hobbyist or seamstress, like: textile information, common terminology, a book and website list, and a table of measurements.

Like a Moleskine notebook it also has a bookmark, and in the back there’s a pocket to keep loose sheets of paper.

The paper

The quality of the paper is pretty good. It takes pencil, pen and fineliners beautifully. Copics, or other types of felt tip pens and markers also work pretty well. The colors will bleed through the back of the paper, though. So you won’t be able to use the back of the paper anymore. Fortunately the paper is thick enough to prevent it from bleed through to the next sheet of paper.

it also works pretty good with watercolor or gouache. The paint doesn’t bleed through, and the back of the paper remains intact and useable. I do recommend to use water as little as possible so the paper doesn’t buckle.

Conclusion

I’m thrilled with this sketchbook. Besides being incredibly cute it’s also very handy. I’ve been drawing since I was a child, but I’m still fairly new to the field of fashion illustration. Thanks to the pre-printed fashion templates I find it fairly easy to create nice designs.

Prices for a Fashionary skecthbook start from $10 at Fashionary.org. Besides the pink “candy pops” special edition which is pictured in this article, the fashionary is also available in other colors and sizes. If you want to try it out first you can download a free printable sample page!
